Riffs Yoga & Wellness sits at 5510 La Jolla Boulevard and opens at 7 a.m. Bird Rock Pilates is at 5759, in Suite A. That is roughly 250 address numbers of boulevard. Between those two doors you can now take a class, sit in an infrared sauna, use a cold plunge, have breakfast cooked without seed oils, and pick up a loaf of bread on the way home. Until this summer, the recovery and post-workout meal steps were not part of that list. Three openings between late July and the first of September added them.
Three Openings in Six Weeks
The new arrivals came in quick succession, and each one is clearly aimed at the same kind of morning.
Sun Gold Diner opened at 5632 La Jolla Blvd. the week of July 20. The La Jolla Light reported in its August business roundup that the diner uses no seed oils and a mostly organic menu. It makes its salsas, hummus and nut milk in house. In the Light's account, owner Benjamin Walter described the food as "quality you can taste and feel." Early favorites were the tri-tip sandwich and a salmon plate served with the house salad. The room keeps a vintage diner look, and the coffee bar is built around what Walter called a "state of the art espresso machine." The diner's online ordering page currently says it is not accepting online orders, so call ahead before you plan a morning around it.
On August 1, Lavande Vitality House at 5544 La Jolla Blvd. held a grand reopening after a renovation. According to the same Light roundup, the work added three healing spaces, an organic café, and a larger outdoor sanctuary with a soaking tub, an infrared sauna and a fire pit. The centerpiece is a cave-like room lined with rose quartz. New café drinks include a Blueberry Dream Latte and a Salted Maple Cloud.
Then on September 1, Bird Rock Athletic Club opened at 5721 La Jolla Blvd.
Each of the three fills a step the boulevard did not offer before: a meal planned around a workout, and two separate places to recover afterward.
The Recovery Step Arrived Twice
Between August 1 and September 1, Bird Rock gained infrared saunas at two addresses, 5544 and 5721. The two spaces are set up for different kinds of visits.
Lavande's sauna sits in an outdoor sanctuary with the soaking tub and fire pit. Its own calendar lists workshops, trainings and ceremonies through the fall. The setting is slow and social, and the café sits on the same property.
The Athletic Club treats recovery as the end of a training session. Its website lists a Polar Wave dry cold plunge, an infrared sauna, heated HydroMassage, Normatec compression and percussion therapy. Lajolla.ca's profile of the club notes that the cold plunge is dry, so you need no swimsuit or towel. Co-owner Michael Divine told the outlet, "It's like a big ice pack over you." The club also has a private Pilates reformer area, personal training, and a body composition scan that reports more than 40 measurements. It also offers Skillcourt, a LIDAR-based movement system used by professional sports teams.
The club caps its membership on purpose. Divine and his mother, co-owner Beth Hunter, told lajolla.ca that they intend to keep the room uncrowded and start a waitlist once they reach their cap.
"We don't want it to feel big box," Hunter said. "We're not just a gym, it's a club, where you know everybody you work out with."
Divine described the goal in the same piece: "It's so convenient for the neighborhood here in Bird Rock." The club's signup page lists founding memberships as sold out and regular memberships at $249 a month, with limited spots open.
The Classes Were Already Here
The new businesses matter as much as they do because they opened next to studios that were already running. Barre3 Bird Rock is at 5705 La Jolla Blvd. The Athletic Club is at 5721 and Bird Rock Pilates is at 5759. That puts three training businesses within about 50 address numbers at the north end of the strip.
The south end has its own group. Riffs Yoga at 5510 holds classes from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Wayfarer Bread & Pastry is at 5525 and Lavande is at 5544. A yoga class, a pastry and a sauna now sit within about 35 numbers of each other.
The middle of the strip is where you eat. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is at 5627, Sun Gold is directly across the boulevard at 5632, and Beaumont's is at 5662. The boulevard now has a training end, a food middle, and a south end that mixes all three.
A Bird Rock Morning by the Clock
Put the posted hours in order and the sequence follows the boulevard:
- 6 a.m. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters at 5627 opens Friday through Sunday. On Monday through Thursday it opens at 6:30 a.m.
- 7 a.m. Riffs Yoga at 5510 starts its day, seven days a week.
- After class. The Athletic Club's recovery area at 5721 or Lavande's sanctuary at 5544, depending on which end of the strip you trained at.
- 8 a.m. Wayfarer Bread & Pastry at 5525 opens Tuesday through Sunday.
- Late morning. Sun Gold at 5632 for the tri-tip sandwich or the salmon plate.
- 10 a.m. on weekends. Beaumont's at 5662 opens on Saturday and Sunday.
The studios and the Athletic Club take bookings through their own sites. If your morning depends on a specific barre3, Pilates or club slot, book it before you set out.
Where the Morning Runs Out
The day on this strip shifts in the early afternoon. Wayfarer closes at 2:30 p.m. and is closed on Mondays. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters closes at 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and at 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Beaumont's opens at 4 p.m. on weekdays. It stays open until 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and until midnight on Thursday and Friday.
Two evening options still use the morning businesses. Wayfarer takes pre-orders for pizza on Friday and Saturday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Riffs runs classes until 7:30 p.m. on weeknights, so the sauna-and-class pairing at the south end of the strip also works after work.
Monday is the weak spot. Wayfarer is closed, and the coffee shop opens at 6:30 instead of 6. The rest of the week, the walk from 5510 to 5759 covers class, recovery, coffee and breakfast in that order.
At The Comiskey Group, we follow Bird Rock one address at a time, from a new sauna at 5544 to a capped membership at 5721. If you'd like to know what is changing on your own stretch of La Jolla Boulevard, or you are wondering how these new neighbors affect the value of your home nearby, we're happy to talk it through.
